Ella Wilding

Ella lives in Newport, Gwent but she is a regular visitor to her childhood home near Chapel Lawn in the Redlake Valley.

She finds inspiration in features of the landscape of South Shropshire, which appeals to her sense of mark-making and visual curiosity: “I begin by working outdoors, enjoying the experience of being in the moment and part of my surroundings”. Drawing is central to Ella’s art practice; the process of looking and describing in charcoal facilitates a way of thinking about a place and builds up a visual vocabulary.

Painted sketches are made outdoors in order to capture the colours of the time and place also. The information gathered inform the later studio paintings where other factors come into play: a playful approach to the materiality of paint and a personal interpretation of all that has been seen and felt.
